The cavalry under Colonel Howard confiscates the Nez Perces' horses to prevent them from fleeing to Canada, which would be the tribe's only way to avoid their own decline on the reservation. Deputy Chief White Feather takes on the seemingly impossible task of bringing the herd of horses back. His chances of success improve when he learns from Cayuse scouts that Fort Lapwai, the Americans' target, has been destroyed and that Howard's group is in trouble. The Cayuse pursue the cavalry and the disbanding groups arrive at the ruins of the fort at the same time.
