Dr. Adrian Helmsley, a member of a global geophysical team investigating the effects of unprecedented solar storms on Earth, learns that the Earth's core is heating up. He warns US President Thomas Wilson that the Earth's crust is becoming unstable and that without proper preparations to save a portion of the world's population, all of humanity is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis stumbles upon the same information. As world leaders race to build "arks" to escape the impending catastrophe, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. At the same time, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of unprecedented magnitude wreak havoc across the globe.
