In 1839, the slave ship Amistad set sail from Cuba bound for America. During the long voyage, Cinque led the slaves in an unprecedented rebellion. They were subsequently imprisoned in Connecticut, and their release became the subject of heated debate. Freed slave Theodore Joadson, wanting Cinque and the others freed, hired real estate lawyer Roger Baldwin to support his cause. Eventually, John Quincy Adams also became an ally.
