In Paris, Commissioner Stan Jalard and Inspector Simon Lecache plan to leave the police force to enjoy a quieter life in the West Indies. During a routine visit to a nightclub, they encounter Schneider, a notorious gangster and public enemy number one. At the scene of his arrest, Simon is shot dead at close range by the criminal. Stan decides to stay with the police to avenge Simon. As godfather to Christian, Simon's son, who lives partly at boarding school and partly at home, he takes on the responsibility of raising him. Two years later, Stan is promoted and learns that Schneider has resurfaced in the capital. A long manhunt begins.
