Real estate developer Jake Berman hires private investigator and war veteran Jake Gittes for what appears to be a routine marital case. After Berman shoots his wife's lover, who also happens to be his business partner, Gittes becomes entangled in a web of conspiracy and fraud connected to the oil reserves beneath Los Angeles. During his investigation, Gittes hears a voice from his past, prompting him to reopen a traumatic case in Chinatown.
