After World War II, Dresden faced a great deal of reconstruction work. To get the cigarette factory where he once worked up and running again, Kalle must travel to Wittenberg—the only place where carbide can be found. Once there, Kalle finds himself in the predicament of having to hitchhike seven heavy barrels of carbide back to Dresden. But his ingenuity and optimistic attitude help him turn the strenuous task into an adventurous, entertaining, and fun journey.
