Emma (Michèle Mercier), a young shepherdess, is discovered by the artist George Romney (Boy Gobert). She leaves her sheep behind to settle in London with Romney, who hires her as a model. In return, the painter transforms the young farmer's wife into an elegant young society lady who is soon surrounded by a host of admirers. Her rise in society is meteoric. Old Lord Hamilton (Sir John Mills), the English ambassador to Naples, asks for her hand in marriage. Emma accepts the offer and follows her husband to Sicily, where she becomes the confidante of Queen Marie-Caroline (Nadja Tiller) of Naples. She will also experience a great love affair with Admiral Horatio Nelson (Richard Johnson). Unfortunately, Lord Nelson is killed at the Battle of Trafalgar while Emma is pregnant with their child.
