In Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, César Charron owns a theater in the Rue Morgue, where he and his wife, Madeleine Charron, who suffers from terrible nightmares, stage the play "Murders in the Rue Morgue." When several people connected to César are murdered with acid, Inspector Vidocq's prime suspect is César's former partner, René Marot. But Marot murdered Madeleine's mother many years earlier and committed suicide immediately afterward.
