Peter and the Wolf on DVD

Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic masterpiece, which premiered in Russia in 1936, is acclaimed not only for its spectacular music but also for the story itself—the tale of a young boy who outwits a cunning wolf. George Daugherty brings this timeless story to a modern audience by seamlessly blending live action, animation, and music from the RCA Symphony Orchestra. The story begins with a grandfather (Lloyd Bridges) welcoming his daughter (Kirstie Alley) and grandson (Ross Malinger of "Sleepless in Seattle") to his country house. After lunch, the trio settles in as the grandfather recounts "the story" of Peter's adventures with a bird, a cat, and a dizzy duck at the edge of "a very dark wood." The film then transforms into a clever animated sequence designed by the legendary Chuck Jones (of Wile E. Coyote fame). The “story within a story” comes to life, while the accompanying musical instruments also appear as playful personalities.
