In August 1949, Life magazine ran a headline asking, "Jackson Pollock: Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" The film is a retrospective look at the life of an extraordinary man who has rightly been described as "an artist devoted to concealment, a celebrity no one knew." As he grappled with self-doubt and found himself in a lonely tug-of-war between the need to express himself and the desire to shut himself off from the world, Pollock began a downward spiral.
