The charm and audacity of bank robber John Dillinger, a man who lived during the Great Depression, made him popular with much of the oppressed American population, but he was also a thorn in the side of J. Edgar Hoover and the fledgling FBI. Desperate to capture the elusive outlaw, Hoover declared Dillinger his first Public Enemy Number One. He tasked his best agent, Melvin Purvis, with bringing him to justice, dead or alive.
