Alvin Straight, a retired farmer and widower in his seventies, learns one day that his distant brother Lyle has suffered a stroke and may not recover. Determined to settle things with Lyle while he still can, Alvin lives in Wisconsin, while Alvin is stuck in Iowa without a car or driver's license. Then he gets the idea to make the journey in his old lawnmower, and so begins a scenic and at times profoundly spiritual odyssey.
