After compulsive gambler Sir Giles Staverley loses his fortune and all his money at dice, he realizes he has only one thing of value left: his daughter Serena. In one final game, he bets for his daughter's hand in marriage, convinced he won't lose this time. Unfortunately, he loses after all, to the evil Lord Wrotham. Unable to return home and tell his daughter that he has lost her in a game of dice, Sir Giles kills himself on the spot. Lord Vulcan, who witnessed the events, takes pity on Serena Staverley, even though they have never met. He challenges Lord Wrotham to a game of dice, with the winner receiving both Staverley Court and Miss Serena.
