A unicorn learns from a mysterious butterfly that it is supposedly the last of its kind, as all others were driven away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. They are eventually joined on their quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a middle-aged woman who has dreamed of seeing a unicorn her entire life. Their journey takes them far from home, all the way to King Haggard's castle.
