In postwar Vienna, Holly Martins, a writer of pulp westerns, arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood friend Harry Lime, only to learn that he has died. Martins develops a conspiracy theory after learning of a "third man" who was present at the time of Harry's death. He encounters the interference of British officer Major Calloway and falls head over heels for Harry's grieving lover, Anna.
