Kara Ben-Nemsi ("Karl the German"), after finishing his ordeal in the Balkans, receives a Firman (valuable passport) from the Padishah (Ottoman Sultan) before continuing his journey through Kurdistan. Achmed El Corda, the son of Sheikh Mohammed Emin of the Hadedhin Bedouin tribe in Halef, was captured by the Machredsh (Turkish governor) of Mosul for resisting the confiscation of water by his Turkish troops. Kara takes care of his rescue.
