A new, technologically superior Soviet nuclear submarine, the Red October, is heading toward the US coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius. The American government believes Ramius is planning an attack. Lone CIA analyst Jack Ryan has a different theory: he believes Ramius is planning to defect, but he only has a few hours to find him and prove it—because the entire Russian naval and air force leadership is also searching for Ramius.
