Pale-faced bug-killer Bill Lee and his dead-eyed wife Joan enjoy getting high on Bill's pesticides while hanging out with their Beat poet friends. After meeting the diabolical Dr. Benway, Bill is given a drug made from a centipede. After consuming it, he accidentally kills Joan, takes commands from his typewriter, which transforms into a cockroach, lands in an ever-changing Mediterranean town, and learns that his hipster friends have published his work—which he can't remember doing.
