Frank Corvin, 'Hawk' Hawkins, Jerry O'Neill, and 'Tank' Sullivan were members of Project Daedalus, the Air Force's spaceflight test program, but their hopes were dashed in 1958 with the founding of NASA and the use of trained chimpanzees. They blackmail their way into Earth orbit when the mysterious Russian communications satellite "Ikon" begins to veer off course and threatens to crash into Earth.
